Looking at Berlin thirty years after the end of the cold war, I remembered Michael Schmidt’s book Berlin nach 45, which he photographed thirty years after the end of the second world war. I took up the publication as a kind of formal script. Using the same camera and format (13x18 sheets), I built analogous subjects, formal resonances, and at certain times, exact topographies.

Reenacting his parameters seemed to enforce an historical perspective: reading Schmidt’s series vis-a-vis the fall of the wall, and present-day Berlin as both post-war and post-89. It helped me to position the ongoing flattening of Berlin by financialisation.

This series comprises 55 hand-enlarged silver gelatine prints.
